Event Showcases Elegant Estate Homes In Oak Park’s Fair Oaks Area

The Historical Society of Oak Park & River Forest will hold its Fifth Annual Housewalk, Fabulous Fair Oaks: Oak Park’s Elegant Estate Homes, on Saturday, April 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s tour will feature seven outstanding homes in Oak Park’s exclusive Fair Oaks Subdivision that is part of the Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie School of Architecture Historic District.

Homes that will be open include magnificent Victorian, Prairie Style and Revival Style residences designed by Tallmadge & Watson, George W. Maher, Charles E. White, Jr. and other renowned architects.

This neighborhood, subdivided from the farm once owned by pioneer Henry Austin, Sr., was considered in 1890 to be "without question one of the best west of the city, the land itself partly high ridge……the improvements being made are first class."

Pre-paid reserved tickets are $30 ($25 for members). Reservations can be made by calling 708 848-6755, e-mail to oprfhistorymatters@sbcglobal.net or mailing a check to the Historical Society, P. O. Box 771, Oak Park, 60303. Tickets can also be purchased for $35 that day at Unity Church of the Daily Word (former residence designed by George Maher), 405 N. Euclid. All proceeds benefit the Historical Society, a not-for-profit community organization. For more information call 708 848-6755.

The Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest was organized in 1968 to operate a Museum, Archives, and Research Center on behalf of the sister villages of Oak Park and River Forest, Ill.

Located on the second floor of the National Historic Landmark Pleasant Home since 1970, the organization is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit which serves the community by preserving and making accessible artifacts, photographs, documents, and other material that tell stories about the rich heritage of our community.
