EXPLORE   SOUTH   OAK   PARK

South Oak Park is home to approximately two-thirds of the residents of Oak Park, with a variety of attractions, homes, businesses and parks. This area of the village was primarily developed in the first half of this century, during Oak Park's period of "Nurturing Excellence," with the explosive growth fueled by S. T. Gunderson & Sons's Development of stucco 4-square and bungalow houses (notice the "L" fare of 5 cents!)

Today, South Oak Park features two of the main tourist attractions in town - the Conservatory and George Maher's Pleasant Home. South Oak Park is also home to most of the Village Government buildings, including Village Hall, the Township of Oak Park, the Park District of Oak Park and Elementary School District 97 Offices.

Concerts Under the Dome is the one of Chicagoland's premier Chamber Music Series. FitzGerald's is the foremost Chicagoland Music Venue. (OK, so it's technically across Roosevelt Road in Berwyn, but the Fitzgerald brothers live in Oak Park.) Rehm Pool is one of the most fabulous swimming pool complexes in Chicagoland, and some of the very best Italian Ice can be slurped at Gina's on Roosevelt Road at East Avenue.

South Oak Park is most convenient to transportation, with service from both the Green and Blue CTA L-Trains, and easy access to the Eisenhower Expressway (I 290).

Below we offer some pictures of this vibrant part of our village. The South Oak Park Map gives a feeling for the varied mix of attractions. Oor tour will expand into a full-blown Biking Tour with photos -- when the weather lets up, and we can get the bikes out again! August 18, 1999 - the photos are at the developer, and the biking tour will appear!
